Can a new monitor cause a pc to crash?

I recently purchased a new monitor. (Dell S2716DG). I've got it hooked up via DisplayPort and my computer will just randomly CTD if I'm in games. I have installed the drivers on the disc that came with the monitor as well as update and reinstall my GPU drivers multiple times. I've got the monitor running at 144hz in native 2560x1440. I just don't understand. It will mostly crash when playing games and recording with OBS, but it also happens if I'm not recording. Relevant specs below.

GPU : Gigabyte G1 GTX 980 Core @ 1500mhz, Mem @ 4000Mhz CPU : 8600k @ 4.3Ghz RAM : 16Gb Ripjaws ddr4 @ 3000 Mhz OS : Windows 10 home latest update
