How do I boost the performance speed of my laptop?

Back in 2016 or so my sister got a laptop for her bday. Straight out the box it was pretty slow. She only used it a few times cuz it's so slow and then gave it to me a few weeks ago. I factory reset it so I can start from scratch and that helped a bit but not much. It's a windows 10 home Lenovo with 4gb of RAM and an i3 processor. My buddy told me I'd be better off running XP instead of win. 10 if I wanted it to perform its best. Is it possible to make it better and faster without having to mess with the OS or making drastic changes?
