So, I for one am extremely excited about the changes recently brought about in Action Comics. Although I'm a huge comic nerd, I'm acutely aware that outsiders can be confused. Less by the result of the retcon, but more about the method that created it.
Explaining it to my wife, her eyes glazed over a bit when I went into the whole "well, this Superman is from pre flashpoint, and this Superman was post flashpoint. But this is the only person that it applies to, so yeah, really weird." It got better by the beginning of the issue: "Ah, so it was just one person, split in half".
But the result of the retcon? Nice. Clean. Simple. Superman and Lois are married and have a kid. They were always the same people as their counterparts.
This then begs the question, what stays and what goes of N52 continuity? Looking at the splash page, it seems only some of the N52 universe is coming over, and very little of it actually coming from the Superman titles.
So, here's my suggestion for what to keep, and how to square it with Post-crisis Superman's history:
Action Comics 1-18 from N52: Brilliant, mad, sorta timeless Superman. I think its a much better start than early issues of Man of Steel from the 80s. I think its more timely, more interesting, and leads to an evolution of the character.
The Armor: Hear me out, I like the idea of Armor as it being used by early Superman, and that it inspires any later appearances. I'm okay with it going away with the usage of the Super-Flare.
Super-Flare: C'mon, its kinda cool. Dumping all your energy in one blast, but the tradeoff is that you're powerless? Nifty. Its also needed for the origin of the awesome Kenan Kong, New Super-Man
The Geoff Johns / JRJR Run that debuted Neil the "other" Superman.
Romance with Wonder Woman: Hear me out. I really liked it. I loved the Superman / Wonder Woman series together. I thought it was really interesting. They even flirted with getting them together back in 1988, me thinks. Was only for a few issues. Why not say they had a passionate affair that eventually fizzled out? And then Clark realized he needed to connect to someone who wasn't just an outsider, but someone more human? It would also mean more that Lois and Diana are now friends, and it speaks to the aspirational nature of superman. If your wife and your ex were on good terms, isn't that a good thing?
Justice League: War and the origin of the league. I absolutely loved JLA year one, but I gotta say, after the JL movies, people will think that the leagues number one foe is darkseid. And it should probably stay that way. Plus, it helps establish the League as the the DCU's "big guns" from the beginning.
Jimmy Olsen as peer: We dont' need a teenage kid anymore. Make him their age. One of the best parts of Superman: American alien was making Jimmy, Pete Ross, and Kenny Braverman Clark's peers. Superman can always be a last son, and he can always be wistful when he's in his fortress, wondering what might have been. But he isn't a loner. He makes friends, and makes them easily. Jimmy was created in the radio show to have an audience identifier for little kids. In 1940. Let it go guys.
Red Underwear: Unless the setting actually is 1940's-1960's (ala JSA: Unholy Three or DC: the New Frontier), just let it go man. There literally are not circus strongmen anymore. No cultural touchstone besides being ridiculous. Never wore em, they never showed up.
Stuff I hope disappears: The Pocket Universe from Post Crisis: Despite my love of Matrix Supergirl, her origin and that story are just problematic. I think they disappeared around Infinite Crisis, and may be completely wiped by this point. Now there would be two zods, time trapper, a third legion? Yikes. Also, you can still have the journey where Superman goes in Exile, but how about just simplify it to: Kryptonian Villains (how about U-Ban and Kizo for a contiuity nod) show up from Phantom zone. Superman has to kill them to save the world, but the result drives him into exile? Yeah, simple. Or what the hell, make it part of the multiverse
Truth: Well, I loved seeing superman as a depowered hero, and it was really interesting. The problem is IF his identity was never revealed then there is no need for him to be on the run. And if Lois was married to him and had a kid by this point, no way she'd reveal his secret.
Last Days of Superman: Obviously. Never happened.
What do you guys think? Stuff from N52 or Post-Crisis to keep or change? Why?
