Do letterers still actually write the words by hand?

Given how uniform the lettering appears to be, my guess is that the letterer is now just in charge of typing things out on a keyboard, choosing a font and font size and placing the words in the appropriate places, but I could be wrong. At one time, it was all done by hand and maybe it's considered an artform worth keeping. Does anyone actually know?
