This might be a bit too sociological for this sub, but I've been thinking about this question. I've been very curious why early twentieth-century pop fiction started having female action heroines when that was not really a thing in the nineteenth century. Comics in the 40s are the best example of this, with superheroines really emerging, including quite a few characters who predate Wonder Woman, like Miss Fury or Sheena. I'm wondering if anybody could speculate as to what changed in American culture or pop culture during this time period that led to creators making stories with action heroines and superheroines. Any theories or resources that would help explain this would be appreciated.
