By the numbers, using Age & Games Played to project positions of need for the Pies

So, obviously we can all see that the Pies performance is not quite matching the heroics of the last two years, and I was interested to look deeper into our list profile and see where the improvement might come from.

Firstly, it’s probably important to start with the overall age profile and games played from our list.

Games Played | Avg Age

92.3 | 25.4

This places us as the oldest list in the competition, and the third most experienced prior the mid-season draft. However, despite this we have 13 players on our list who have played under 10 games, and 18 who have played under 25 games.

But let’s get into our positions, to save space OL will be in reference to our overall list.

Position | Avg Age | Avg GP| Avg Age v OL| Avg GP v OL

Gen Def | 24.8 | 97 | -0.6 | 5

Key Def | 24.8 | 57.5 | -0.6 | -34.8

Ruck | 24.2 | 43.4 | -1.2 | - 48.9

Mid | 26.4 | 132.5 | 1 | 43.2

Gen Fwd | 24.25 | 75.8 | -1.15 | -16.5

Key Fwd | 27.8 | 88.8 | 2.4 | -3.5

So, the first thing that stands out is exactly how bare our key position stocks are at both ends of the ground. While this isn’t exactly ground-breaking, but having a combined 8 players who I would consider key position players isn’t a whole lot.

Further to this, we are relatively old in the Key Forward department, come next season we will not have a key forward under the age of 26 (Kruges) with only Ash Johnson for company for Key Forwards under the age of 30.

At least, with our key defenders you can project (or hope) for significant growth from both Charlie Dean (23yo and 7GP) and Josh Eyre (21 and 0).

The position where we have the most unrealised draft capital is currently general defender. Where we currently have 4 players, 22 and under who have yet to play 5 games or more. With these being our second most experienced group, it’s going to be the development of TJ, Ryan, De Mattia and Parker that’s going to be really important as Howe, WHE and Markov age out of the side.

Rucks are low key a mess, we have 5 of them and only 1 under the age of 29 has played a single game.

Confident in the age profile of our general forwards to maintain consistency in this area going forward.
