I'm a junior at my university and there aren't any environmental organizations or events, which is odd because it's a research school with a strong focus on oceanography and environmental disciplines. What I'd like to do is create a sort of interdisciplinary group or forum event where students from diverse fields can come to give their expertise and discuss the facets of environmental issues. Much of my coursework as an ecology major is focused on these issues, but it does little in the way of finding solutions if the natural sciences are the only tools used to address them. It would be great to have input from the other disciplines so that we are all more informed about what the issues look like to each field and what solutions are out there. I'm a firm believer that every discipline has something to contribute.
All this sounds great, but I don't know the first this about student orgs or events. I know the practical how-to's as laid out by my university, but I don't know how to see how much interest there is for this kind of thing, how to engage people, how to run a forum, etc. I only have about a year and half left so ideally I'd like to create something that is sustained and exists after I'm gone. I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who has successfully done this or has some advice on it.
