I want to get started in collecting, where should I start?

Hello all, I’ve been following the Reddit thread for awhile and I want to get into collecting but I don’t know where to start. Not looking to spend thousands and thousands, but I’m ok with paying for reasonable valuations. Where would you begin if you were starting again?
I got the itch after helping my GF sort through her grandpas wheat Pennies. There was a few hundred 😂
