Can’t play online with Ps Now

Just wanted to play some co-op for a tough mission, but when I try to go online, it takes me to the “Subscribe to PsPlus” page. I haven’t had problems in playing other games online but now.
Do I really need Ps Plus to play online? Doesn’t PsNow do that too?
