Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister SaskPoliticker held a press conference at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon to announce the establishment of a federal uranium crown corporation

“Nuclear energy is the future. It is our future, our path forward in the energy transition, and our path to prosperity thanks to the rich uranium reserves we have here in Canada, in Saskatchewan in particular.”

“Demand potential is clear, and it is without doubt in Canadas economic and national security interest to become a leader in uranium production, and to ensure production is Canada-based and owned.”

“We are proud of the companies right here in Saskatchewan that are world leaders in uranium production and mining. Cameco is a model of business success that has balanced efficiency, environmental protection, and indigenous engagement to become the most profitable and socially responsible uranium producer in the world.”

“We believe there is a part to play for government in this industry in partnership with companies like Cameco and new players like NexGen. Passive government ownership in partnership with industry can teach a crown corporation the skills necessary to stand on its own, while ensuring a fair public return and a competitive environment that is attractive for investors.”

“Our government will actively seek and warmly accept partnership proposals with Cameco and NexGen amongst many others to develop the uranium industry with CanUranCo, the Canada Uranium Corporation.”

“One such project for partnership we have in mind is Rook I right here in Saskatchewan. We are more than willing to put up half the capital costs for the project that NexGen has planned and will streamline the regulatory process to get shovels in the ground on that project. The return is guaranteed and extremely lucrative for stakeholders and Canadian taxpayers with the participation of our uranium Crown.”

“If NexGen can copy the economic potential of the Rook I project elsewhere in Canada and Saskatchewan, our government will be on the phone and in boardrooms to get deals done.”

“CanUranCo has the potential to provide billions in revenue for Canadian taxpayers while protecting our resource wealth, attracting investment, and creating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities.”

“Our Uranium Crown will also aid the Government of Saskatchewan by paying royalties to the province, since uranium production is rightly provincial jurisdiction.”
