Google Cloud Success
Post Body

I'm writing here to document my success gaming on Google Cloud.

I set up a Compute Engine virtual machine about 2 weeks ago, and it's been absolutely amazing.

The setup details:

Machine Type:
n1-standard-8 (8 vCPUs, 30 GB memory) (Preemptibility: On)
GPU:
1 x NVIDIA Tesla P4 Virtual Workstation
(Be sure to select the tick box for setting up grid license and drivers, or you cannot change resolution past 1280x768)
Image:
windows-server-2016-dc-v20201013
Storage:
350Gb Standard Persistant Disk (Set to keep disk if instance is deleted)
Location:
West Virginia Data Center - (zone: us-east4-b) - I'm located in the north east.
Desktop Client:
Parsec(Host)|Parsec for Mac OS(Client)
Download Speed:
Not sure.. Fast!
Latency:
Parsec normally reads it as 35-40ms. It's on the high end, but I seem to be dealing just fine.

**Be sure to power down the machine after finishing!*\*
Parsecs automated script has an install for an automatic shutoff timer. It can save you money if you forget!

So far I've used around $58 worth of the free google cloud credit of $300.

I'm using this setup while I await a shadow PC. (Which will probably have worse performance...but a better price.) I'm fine with lowering my settings. Shadow gets activated in January (if all goes well).

I've used this instance to run Mafia: Definitive Edition at ultra settings, GTA V w/ LSPDFR @ high-end settings and Microsoft Flight Simulator at 1080p resolution and high settings.

Great frame rate with all games so far. Thoroughly enjoying FS2020, I've always wanted to run a flight sim, but never had the PC to do it. Using a custom mapping of a Xbox 1 controller, with mouse and keyboard, Ive had a blast flying all sorts of aircraft all over the world. I'm actually learning so much.

After I complete Mafia DE, I'll be awaiting the next AAA game to play.

Cons:

  • No dual screen support (Parsec has an option, but I find it quite expensive)
  • Latency is sometimes noticeable, however it sorts itself out most of the time.
  • Expensive to pay by the hour. Most sessions will cost me ~$5 dollars for a few hours of gaming. (the credit helps! $300 upon signing up.)
