Hey everyone:)
Have only been climbing for about 3 months and I have been having a lot of fun and learning lot. One thing I'm really struggling to figure out is where the heck you put your feet on volumes to not slip? There's 2 routes at my gym right now that are around or right above my level that are using volumes and every time I try my foot just immediately slips off. Is there a certain point on the volume you're supposed to use? Or is there some technique I'm not understanding? I've learned a lot from reading posts in this sub, so thought I'd ask here.
Thank you :)
There's no rules that work 100% of the time, it depends totally on the position of the different holds relative to each other, angle of the volume, etc. That said, a couple of general tips:
drop your heels WHILE still keeping the pressure on your toes/the ball of your feet. You should be able to feel it through the back of your legs/your butt, and like the weight down on your heel is anchoring your feet on the volume through the contact point at your toes.
- if you can have your feet further out from the wall (if the volume is big enough to let you), this can let you lean your upper body in a bit further and can feel more stable
- believe! find a volume with some comfortable hand holds, stand on it with one foot, and rock your body around - put your weight to the right, then the left, up, down, move the pressure up and down your toes and foot, and get familiar with it :)
