See title; I've heard of this guy as a contemporary of Janáček for many years now, and I still haven't taken the plunge.
To give context of the type of things I usually listen to: some of my favorite composers are Pärt, Mussorgsky, Mahler, Penderecki, Messiaen, and Sibelius, just to name a few. I'm a trombonist, so naturally I enjoy pieces with a heavier emphasis on brass writing. I also very much like Janáček; his Sinfonietta and Glagolitic Mass are often in my rotation. Are there any pieces you think I should look into to start my Martinů journey?
Also, are there any conductor/orchestra combos that really nail what Martinů intends? I.E: Tönu Kaljuste Estonian Philharmonic for Pärt, Ashkenazy/Philharmonia for Sibelius, etc. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
