-201 CE-
All the Northern Cavale knew that the rain would fluctuate over the years. Some rainy seasons would produces such bountiful gifts from the sky that all the land would be flooded by the season's end. In other years, nary a speck of rain would fall. But never before had the Northern Cavale endured such an extensive dry period. Over the six years since the tragedy of the Yavāssa, not one had even witnessed an average level of rain. On the Great Chief's latest hunting expedition, the sun shined perpetually in the midst of what was ordinarily the rainy season. Vorek's group could only find the picked-at carcasses of dead animals, long since ravaged by the vultures, the wild dogs, and other scavengers besides. Without much of any game or even wild plants growing in the extended drought, the Northern Cavale had already lost 20% of their population to a lethal combination of famine and disease.
On his empty-handed return, Vorek made up his mind on what must be done, and arranged a meeting with the people of Kuzeycol. "We must conduct a great raid against the Southern Cavale. By the fruits of their labor, we can live to see another year." declared the Great Chief. At this statement, murmurs of opposition and dissent arose from the assembled Cavale. One person spoke up to point out the two Cavale groups' long trading relationship. To this, Vorek pointed out that the Northern Cavale had practically nothing to offer their southern neighbors in light of the extended drought. After further argument and deliberation, the Great Chief finally managed to convince the other Cavale in his favor.
Over the next few weeks, able-bodied men from all around the Northern Cavale lands answered the Great Chief's summons. Ultimately, Vorek's raiding party marched southwards at over 5,000 strong, each man assembled in small groups and armed with the best available armaments (mostly spears). Leading the groups was Vorek himself, resting atop a litter being carried by four assistants. In two weeks' time, the raiders finally reached the first of the Southern Cavale villages and proceeded to overwhelm their inhabitants' attempts at self-defense. After many more successful raids, the Northern Cavale had secured sustenance with which to endure the next few months.
Finally, Chief Vorek's entourage occupied its customary position at the head of one last raid. This time, the Northern Cavale pushed all the way to the great city of Guneyorman in the south. In Guneyorman, however, the defenders were much greater in number and somewhat more organized as well. The battle raged on as a stalemate for a while, until Vorek and his assistants were killed in the midst of the fighting. At this crucial turning point, the remaining Northern Cavale finally retreated.
Still, the Northern Cavale raid was a great success overall, and it further engendered an advantageous peace arrangement. By the terms of this agreement, the Southern Cavale would supply them with food as necessary until the great Northern Cavale drought lifted. Additionally, the Altin Tepelir settlements would give 50% of the altin mined for the next year to the Northern Cavale. The following rain season, after the appointment of the new chief, proved to be bountiful indeed. As a result, the extended drought finally subsided.
