Believe it or not, my ultimate end goal in civ is actually to find a way to peacefully unite all nations under a single banner, alright perhaps not that overtly, but finding a way to peacefully construct a large nation from multiple parts has always been a goal of mine during my times in power.
Unfortunately as I found out, such task seems to be nearly impossible to accomplish, all due to one annoying trend that I've always noticed: large nations either smoother the smaller towns to a omt status or collapse under the weight of their disagreements.
I can see several reasons why this is the case:
Large scale trade between is mostly unnecessary due to the ways civ mechanics are set-up
When oppressed, people can always easily move to another location without much inconvenience
Namelayer groups are always owned by a single individual and no mechanism exists to take them by force
Nobody likes being told what to do from a far away capital
It is incredibly difficult to balance power between multiple groups of different sizes
When recruiting for your nation it is nearly impossible to convince people to move into your smaller towns unless each town markets separately
The number of leader types in civ is stupidly high
In short, there is little in the way of mechanics to bind people together and the little that does exist isn't enough to overcome the tensions that naturally arise from large groups of people, we have a situation where city states are the norm compared to real life where you can count the number of surviving city states with your fingers.
So the question I leave for you today is: how can we overcome these challenges and make large scale nations work?
