Give me your awesome golden tips for going domination, because I suck at it!

Whenever I try to be a warmonger I run into scenario's where my assault runs to a stop because:
- They suddenly get that first crossbowman
- Cannot siege a city because it has a coast tile and none of my cities can produce galleys or not on that body of water (1 tile lake's are the worst)
- Can't properly attack a city without getting retaliated to hard because it's surrounded in hills or forest and I get hit by archers before I can get in position
