Air superiority is broken?

My friend and I played the thermonuclear war scenario, and we were testing out the airplane mechanics. I had a wall of jet fighters deployed outside my city. He sent an atomic era bomber straight through my line of fighters and nuked my city. What is the point of fighter jets if they can't intercept bombers? IMO this mechanic needs to be fixed. Bombers shouldn't be able to fly through a tile with deployed fighter jets. Opinions?
