Dark Age bogus

Thinking about turning off Golden and Dark ages. Golden ages are fun sure, for the obvious reasons. However, dark ages make me want to turn it off. I just lost 4 settlements that I took over. Three in one turn after entering a new era and a dark age (seemingly out of nowhere) and the fourth one immediately after. Completely shattered my domination run. Been fighting them for like 30 turns now. Any suggestions on what to do to git gud are welcome.
