How to play wide?

Title says it all. I usually ony ever settle 2 cities and all my other cities are usually captured. I tried to play wide the other day but habit made me make a tall civ with a fully maxed liberty tree. Are there any guides out there towards playing Wide? I would love to know how to properly play wide. Thanks in advance!
