What are some useful tips and advice before and going into war

Yes i am a new player but I had a huge defeat against New York (im germany) but i destroyed philadelphia easily. I lined up catapults along and pikemen as meat shields but their trebuchets destroyed by cataputs in one hit. I also had 4 city state allies (2 military) and only 1 of them gave me one troop and they were bowmen. I made peace in the end. I need some tips and adivce please from more experienced player than I am on war in Civ V

PS I have Gods and Kings and Brave new Worlds and I am playing on the world map. thanks
