Passed CIPP/US on 2nd try!
Post Body
I think a lot of these study tips have been posted already, but I passed the CIPP/US on my 2nd try today and wanted to share what worked for me on the second go-round:
- Use the official book and take notes on it. I did outlines for each chapter, but you may approach it differently.
- The Mike Chappelle videos and book are really only good for a broad overview. If you aren't overly familiar with the exam or privacy in general, I would start here, then go to the book for the deep dive. I didn't do Privacy Bootcamp, so I can't speak to how helpful that might be.
- Drill questions! I'm a lawyer and I tend to overanalyze each question, and parse out how each could possibly be the right answer. This got me into trouble on the first try. I'd narrow it down to two possible answers and get stuck in my head--I missed passing by only a few points which was very frustrating! Read the questions closely, and drill the official IAPP questions multiple times. When I did the practice exams, I made sure to read the answer explanation and be sure I understood why each answer was wrong--I'd try to pick out little things about how the question was drafted and how the exam drafters were thinking about their question. That helped me in the exam, to pick out wrong answers based on the language. I wish IAPP had more official practice questions, because I eventually just kind of memorized the answers - so I instead tried to review why each other answer was wrong.
- After you do the exams, figure out your weakest areas, and spend your extra time reviewing those sections of the official book.
- Don't skip the details! If you are trying to learn fast, it is tempting to skip official state statute names, alternate names for bills, section numbers, dates things were enacted, or amounts of fines or penalties. If you're in a true time crunch, that's one thing, but the devil is in the details, as they say -- remembering an alternate name for a statute could help you eliminate a wrong answer, for example.
