Is a wide angle lens a "cinematic" lens?

Post Body

I've heard that several movies are shot with mostly wife angle lenses and that some cinematographers never go past a 50mm equivalent. So is there any truth to this?

Is it best to instead, simply move in closer and shoot a close up with a 35 instead of an 85? Or is there more to it than that?
