I have an A7sII that I never upgraded due to COVID wiping me out, but now it's 8 years old... and I'm in a position where I may need to upgrade sooner rather than later.
So I'm taking camera suggestions. Ideally on the cheaper end. I rent Alexas and Venices and FX's on 95% of my work, so the A7sII has traditionally been my true hybrid photos the occasional cheap low-budget shoot.
My ideal situation would have been to wait for the A7sIV to come out and upgrade to that... but I don't know if I can endlessly wait in the hope it materialises.
I'm fairly heavily invested in Sony, plus I have a semi-cine modded vintage Nikon prime set.
I've been throwing around the idea of the new Blackmagic Cinema 6k, but its quirks are kinda putting me off, and I'm not sure how many of the production shops I might be utilising it on are properly set up for a BMD raw workflow.
The FX3 seems like a perhaps more aligned choice, but it's $1300 more expensive and I'm not sure the image is $1300 better. It also has some quirks that are kinda annoying.
Both these cameras would mean I would probably keep my A7sII to take photos with.
I thought about the Lumix S5IIx but again there are quirks that kinda put me off, and I'm not sure I'm ready to shift away entirely from Sony and E mount - especially when the S5IIx doesn't necessarily seem like it's a huge step up from an A7sIII.
I thought about an A7sIII but the used market doesn't really seem to provide much in the way of discount over new, and I just know in my bones that as soon as I pull the trigger on an A7sIII purchase, the A7sIV will be announced. Just like when I bought an A7s and within the next 6 months the A7sII was announced.....
Also the A7sIII is $1000 more than the Blackmagic, maybe $500 for a used copy, and again I feel like the Blackmagic probably has an edge picture-wise. Also if I traded my A7sII for an A7sIII I could probably get it to a similar pricing to the Blackmagic, but then I wonder if it's not worth just grabbing the Blackmagic then and having a second body that, although it's 8 years old, might enable me to be a bit more flexible.
So. I'm kinda stuck. Any thoughts, help, advice would be very handy. Thanks!
