I had to make one of the toughest decision I've ever had to make on Friday night. By best friend of 10 years, my dog Nick, had not eaten in 48 hours and barely had anything to drink. My wife took him in for xrays at our local vet, and referred us to a cardiology vet in Dallas who could give us more information, but we had to get him there ASAP because he wasn't going to make it until Sunday.
I had to pick him up and carry him into the car. He was so weak he couldn't muster the energy to walk.
The cardiac vet told us he had a sack of fluid that was around his heart, and most of his energy was spent keeping his heart beating, and his lungs breathing. She also told us there was a tumor attached to his heart. I knew at that moment that Nick would not make it out of the building.
I held his head in my lap while the euthanasia process started, and ended. I can still see his eyes and the way he looked at me as if to say "thank you."
So this evening I have his favorite snack, peanut butter crackers, and I thought since he was like my son that a My Father would be appropriate for me.
Love your families, and your pets. If you're a dog person, give them an extra treat for my boy Nick.
