Cigar newbie

Okay, I started to smoke cigars a few years ago. Since then I e really only smoked a few every now and then. My mentor and my boss have been inviting me over to smoke cigars and drink whiskey. While I am no novice to the whiskey drinking and have no problem emptying a glass, I can’t keep the cigar lit to save my life. It seems every other draw, I have to relight. Is there a trick or is that how it goes sometimes?
