I'm helping a friend with this issue. They were using it yesterday, open an email message in Gmail, and the screen immediately went to the "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" message.
I've tried many suggested steps with no luck and I'm trying to recover the OS right now. I downloaded the recovery app, created the USB key for the correct model (took about 15 mins or so), and went to the screen asking for the USB key to be inserted.
I did so, it checked the validity of the USB drive, the screen went blank for about five minutes with the USB key active, then the same "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" screen appeared.
I ran it again, this time saying that the recovery was successful. But when I removed the USB key it restarted to the same "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" screen.
I ran it again. This time the text was all garbled. It checked the media, and got stuck in "System recovery is in progress..."
Has anyone had an experience like this? Are there any other steps I can try?
