Help with Way Walkers 1 [SPOILERS]

Hi, all.

So, I've recently began playing Way Walkers One. It's quite enjoyable, except when it isn't...

Anyway, I got to the part where you, Semryu and ~~Dumbledore~~ the Headmaster go to prison to talk to the girl and the big-ass magic snake pops out.

I guess it's my fault for going "I don't need to untie her, I'm the protagonist!", but every time I fight the thing, I get killed.

Now, I was surprised when I found out you could "respawn", but when I did, I found one of my stats completely depleted.

This is a major no-no for me. I'm really interested in this game but this is absolutely throwing me off. Can any of you homies help me out here? Is it possible for me to somehow win in this even (it feels like I tried all the choices) or, at least, not have my stat destroyed?
