Hello, I've been toying with the idea of moving to China for some time. I am ethnically Chinese and I grew up in a Western country. I speak Mandarin at a conversational level and I'm working on improving my reading and writing skills.
I have some concerns about moving to China which I'm hoping to get advice about before making a decision:
How hard is it to get a job as a foreigner in China? What sort of jobs are in demand apart from teaching English? How hard would it be to find an teaching position with no teaching experience or qualifications? I once talked to someone from Pakistan who went to China with only a TEFL certificate and managed to find a job. I could theoretically do that, but would my ethnicity be an impediment since I don't look like a foreigner?
How is the education system in China? If I have children in the the future I would like to raise them in a Chinese-speaking environment. Does anyone have any experience with the public education system in China? I don't think I'd be able to afford private school fees so my kids would have to go to a public school. My concern would be that they would struggle to learn English and would have trouble adjusting if we came back to the Western country of which I'm a citizen.
How is the healthcare system? I've heard both good and bad things.
In general, it's extremely hard to find objective information about what life is like in China and I'd like to hear from people who have made the move, especially people who have raised kids in China, before I make a decision. Thank you.
