Criminal check question

I told my school that my current legalized criminal check would expire before I could get the residence permit, but not before getting a work permit and Z Visa. They suggested I get a 2nd non criminal check that isnt legalized and that this would be acceptable after getting the Z Visa with the legalized one? Is this possible? Would it likely trap me in China without being able to get a residence permit?
