I work at a dog friendly office. For the most part, it’s a nice place to work, I really enjoy it. Today, I brought my family’s dog with me, as she’s a senior pup and no one else would be home to let her out today. It went great, she’s a lovely dog and gets along well with everyone.
Anyway, at the end of the day, I was packing up to leave. My childfree status is pretty well known at the office. I’m not rude about it, but I’ve made it clear, children are not for me when asked. It also helps that I’m an openly gay woman.
I was cleaning up my desk when my coworker turns to me and says “you know, with how you are with that dog, I think you might have children after all. You have great maternal instincts!”
I kind of laughed and was like “nope. My “maternal instincts” only extends to senior pets. I couldn’t handle being around a child all the time.”
She replied “well, we’ll see in ten years or so! You know, accidents happen!”
To which I said “pretty hard for two women to accidentally make a baby, but you never know!”
She laughed, I think she forgot about that fact. Thankfully, it was all in good humor, so no worries. And I really don’t have any maternal instincts when it comes to actual, human children.
