I am Facebook friends with an old friend of mine from junior high/high school. She's married now and has been pretty open about their struggle with infertility over the last few years. I guess she's been diagnosed with "unexplained infertility". According to her posts, they've done three failed cycles of IUI, and she announced last week that they are now moving onto IVF.
I gave little thought to it until a GoFundMe for them starting popping up on my feed, being shared by our mutual friends. Curiosity got the better of me, so I clicked it. As it turns out, a friend of the couple started a GoFundMe for them...to raise $21K (!!!!) for them to do ONE IVF cycle. The fundraiser backstory says, "(her husband's name) wants nothing more than to raise a family with (my old friend's name) and to leave a behind a great legacy in this world, through his child.ย "
....really?! Granted, my friend didn't create the GoFundMe herself but I have to assume she knew about it. She's already shared the link to her own Facebook thanking everyone for the donations so far.
I'm normally a "live and let live" type of person. If you want to go bankrupt trying to have a kid while hundreds and thousands of children await homes in foster care...then have at it, I guess. But to ask for donations...to the tune of $21k...for something that isn't even a sure thing...because you want to "leave a great legacy in this world"??? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills or maybe I'm just a cold hearted bastard, because all of our mutual friends keep sharing it with captions like, "They are sooo deserving of this! They'd made great parents, please donate!" ...and I'm like...uh, no.
She's actually not guaranteed a baby at all! That's the wildest part to me. IVF can totally fail too, and it's that expensive every round!
Where in my post did I say that I hated her? Iโll give you a hint: nowhere. I simply disagree with asking other people to fund your $21k attempt to have a child, and I disagree that they โdeserveโ people to donate. Iโm allowed to have my opinion- an opinion that most everyone else here shares.
Now kindly buzz off.
Why the fuck do you care that I care? ๐
For the same reason you wasted time writing that moronic reply.
...and yet, here you are. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ

Oh, I wouldn't dream of sharing these thoughts with anyone in my "real life" aside from my husband. I read him the bit about leaving a great legacy and his first words were, "oh, fuck off", lol.
