A rant about a video game.
Post Body

This is going to contain hefty spoilers for the Legacy of the First Blade DLC for Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. So if you're playing it, proceed with caution.

So AC is a series of video games with a pretty simple premise: there's a long, long history of killers going back basically forever that are all linked by a bloodline, meaning the characters all have children to continue the line. This is just an accepted piece of the story that is in the background.

In Odyssey, you can choose to play as a woman if you like. Her name is Kassandra. Being who I am, I picked her. The entire story was incredible, from beginning to end. It is relevant that, as either character, you can romance whoever you want, regardless of gender. So, getting into RPG mode, I made my Kassandra super gay, and romanced a bunch of the women that popped up around the world in the story.

I finish up the main game, and get to the DLC. For this game, it comes in chapters. There are three chapters to this story, and the first one introduces and romanceable guy. I ignore all the romance dialogue options, being a gay woman, and carry on with the story as I please, enjoying it immensely.

Until the end of the chapter. Here's the spoilers.

The game, regardless of your romance choices, forces you into a relationship with this guy. You don't have a choice. It gets worse. There's a period of time where Kassandra puts down the murder tools for roughly a year, and spends time with her forced romance partner in a small town in an eastern part of Greece.

Guess what happens during this year.

The sudden presence of a baby was such a jolting and violent rip out of the immersion that I had to stop playing. I hated it so much, and everything it implied. My character, that I've been given all the control with choices, just lost all that control, and I had no say in it. It almost hurt, how surprising and out of the blue it was.

Being a completionist, I couldn't just not play the game, I had to finish all the DLC. But the rest of Legacy of the First Blade was ALL about this fucking baby, it never stopped. I skipped every cutscene, picked all the violent dialogue options, and ignored the story until it was over. I got all my xbox achievements and then put it away, pretending it didn't happen.

Other games have involved children of the main character (Fallout 4 being a prime example) but it was a largely ignorable piece of the plot. Never in my gaming career have I been ripped so badly out of my roleplaying bubble like Odyssey did to me with that DLC.

Rant over, thanks for coming. I'm still salty about it.
