Hey folks, first time poster, long time lurker etc etc. I'm typing this on my phone so apologies for any bad formatting. I wanted to share with you all some thoughts I had when watching a strange disorder show.
So on this show they had all kinds of folks going through major medical issues, generally very inspiring. Then they had a lady come on who had suffered from a condition known as Crouzon syndrome, which causes a baby's head plates to fuse together before the brain is done growing. This leads to many surgeries, potential for severe brain injury, eyes that bulge out and so on. At this point I'm thinking, wow that's really intense, she's lucky to be alive. But that wasn't really the point of the story.
This lady had 4 kids. One and then a set of triplets, all of whom have Crouzon syndrome. One of the triplets had a skull fused at birth and needed surgery within days of birth. The triplets were 3 at the time of filming, and all had had multiple surgeries and other medical issues stemming from the condition.
Now I understand that there are issues you can't test for, and problems that can happen even with no family history of anything, but to knowingly bring these kids into the world with a exceedingly good chance of them having this condition is unfathomable. I just don't understand why you would do that. Unexpected health issues are a major reason I won't have kids (among others), and there's no way these parents can afford all these surgeries. Why perpetuate it?
Thoughts?
