I was about to close on a house last year, and stopped by for a walk-through. I was riding high on excitement as I left. This is a big accomplishment for me. And the house is located in a fun, walkable urban neighborhood with lots of nearby restaurants and bars and shops... not a sad plastic suburb full of conservative families where I would be absolutely miserable.
While I was in the hood, I decided to visit the local threading salon, which I figured I would frequent following my move.
While chatting with the shop attendant, I mentioned I would be moving to the neighborhood in the future and that I was excited to buy a home.
She asked "how many bedrooms?" I told her three. Then she asked "do you have children?" I said no.
And then she said "so what do you need such a big house for?" Mind you, it's only about 1400 square feet. This is not a McMansion neighborhood.
It's taken me nearly 50 years to be able to buy my own home, totally by myself, in a terrific, desirable location that's perfect for my lifestyle. I have overcome a ridiculous number of personal and professional setbacks that stood between me and home ownership, and I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on rent through the years, cooped up in dark little apartments I could never truly make my own.
But apparently I don't deserve to own a freestanding house of my own because I didn't reproduce. (If I did, I would be an empty-nester by now anyway!)
So there you have it--none of you deserve a yard or guestroom or home office or a home gym or a hobby room... because you didn't make babies. You are not free to spend your hard-earned money as you see fit. You not only have to endure a lifetime of bingos and judgment, you also are not entitled to enjoy the benefits of your choices. Only people who breed should have a house!
I didn't go back to the threading salon. In fact I decided to let my brows grow pretty wild. And I am digging it.
