For context, I'm 28, I live in Toronto, and I'm in The Philippines along with my parents for our vacation. Here are the things I was told:
- "Do you have a baby yet? No? But you are 28! Get that going!"
- "Ah, I see you are still undecided. I was too before, but you will come to your senses."
- "We want to see our grandkids with you. Also it will be certain the child is from our family since you will carry it." (WTF)
- "You don't want to marry and have kids? Who's going to take care of you when you grow old?"
- "You don't want to marry and have kids? Your beauty and body will go to waste!" (This one is especially very gross to me.)
- "You can forget about marriage but have at least one kid. Just get pregnant with someone soon." (This one is my personal favourite, it's so messed up.)
In Toronto, when I say I don't want kids, it's totally acceptable. But here, I have to keep hearing these kinds of statements from family friends/relatives over 60. My cousins and younger acquaintances didn't even bring up marriage, children, family, etc. They were asking questions about my career and lifestyle instead.
I don't understand the fascination of old farts thinking I'm wasting my potential by not having kids when I'm capable of so many other things. I hope this whole child insistence dies soon.
Sorry for the rant and thanks for reading!
