Over the last year, I have been through the wringer trying to find ways to get a salpingectomy (not tubal ligation!) fully covered. I have spent so many hours on the phone with different government agencies, insurances, doctors, etc. and I am at my wits end.
I live in Maryland and thought that the MD Family Planning program would cover it as their website says they cover permanent sterilizations. After 6 months of back and forth trying to find someone who has any answers at all, I finally spoke with someone from the MD Health Exchange who, after flip flopping back and forth about it multiple times, finally came back and said that no, salpingectomy/code 58661 is NOT COVERED by the program. Which is insane because it says on the website that they cover permanent sterilizations. Cool.
Then I called my insurance (CareFirst/BCBS) and they said that they'll cover 70% after my deductible, which would still leave me with about a $3k bill. I need it to be like... $0.
Then I saw these posts

and figured, okay, maybe I'm not saying the right thing or not getting on the phone with the right person. As it sounds like ACA compliant insurance plans (which I'm pretty sure includes my plan?) should FULLY COVER SURGERIES LIKE THIS. I've tried to call my insurance multiple times since then but I keep having issues with the line being disconnected or what have you.
Just spoke with a doctor (who has nearly cleared me for the procedure - we have a telehealth appt on the 30th and I think after that it'll be a go - crossing my fingers, but even if that doesn't work out I have another one I've spoken with who would also clear me) and they said I only have a $30 copay. But then of course the surgery center will have more fees. But they won't be able to run the info/codes through to the insurance company uNTIL I HAVE A DATE FOR SURGERY. And even then they of course have to say "it's just an estimate!"
How do I get answers? How do I figure out how much this is going to cost me? How do I get them to cover this surgery fully? I feel like there is definitely a way that I can make this happen and I'm just not sure how to do this because this process is so confusing and convoluted. Help!
