I'm currently bouncing between 900-1000 on chess.com and I've been playin the Caro quite a bit and trying to learn the correct book moves. Several times now I'm played the advance variation 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 f5 so far so good, almost always met by 4. Bd3. The next suggested move is then 4. ... Bxd3. But why? Why not retreat the bishop and possible move the h pawn for an escape square? Or e6 and complete your pawn pyramid? Is this a case of knowing that your light square bishop will end up as a bad bishop so you trade it early?
