I enjoy chess history a lot particularly the great world championships of yesteryear. Much is written about how Kramnik’s prep in the Berlin blunted Kasparov favoured Ruy Lopez to the point he changed to the D4 opening later in the match when he couldn’t crack Kramnik’s Berlin. My question to clever Redditor’s is why didn’t Kasparov depart toward other E4 variants such as the Scotch game (which he played quite regularly) or the Italian that steered the E4 game away from the drawing Berlin? Was Kasparov psychologically just defeated at that stage?
