Kicking off the 2023 Grand Chess Tour will be the Superbet Chess Classic held in the historic city of Bucharest, Romania. Following last year's popular classical framework, the tournament features ten players in a round-robin fighting for their share of the hefty $350,000 prize fund. This will be the first of two classical events in the tour, and the participants’ first chance to earn points on the tour.

Appearances from new World Champion Ding Liren and his challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi are in the line-up, as well as the 2022 event winner Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and 2022 GCT overall winner Alireza Firouzja.

Format/Time Controls

• The tournament is a 10-player single round-robin taking place from 6-15 May in Bucharest, Romania
• Time Limit: 90 minutes for 40 moves and 30 minutes for the rest of the game; plus 30 seconds increment from move 1.

In the event of a tie for first place in either of the 2023 GCT Classical Events, there shall be a playoff amongst all the players involved in the tie. 1. Where there are two players in the tie, they shall contest a Double Rapid Round Robin (a mini-match consisting of two games) where the time limit shall be game in 15 minutes with a 10 second increment per move from move 1. Where there are three or more players in the tie, the time limit for the Rapid Round Robin shall be game in 10 minutes with a 5 second increment per move from move 1.
