Need an explanation on Ions (Intro to Chem class)
Post Body
In the attached picture is how to calculate the molecular mass of Aluminum sulfate [Al2(SO4)3], but my question is how do they know that the SO4 is a negative 2 ion? I understand how they know that the Al is a positive 3 ion since Al is more likely to lose 3 electrons, but both S and O are more likely to gain 2 electrons, so how is the covalent bond (I'm assuming this is a covalent bond) SO4 a negative 2 ion?
