What happens when you smoke table salt?

A guy told me he uses table salt in his tobacco sometimes, and that it feels fresh and pops. We even tried it, but I know it probably isn’t good for you (neither is the tobacco but that’s not the point) What happens? Why did the salt pop and crackle? And is the “fresh” feeling chlorine or something slightly burning the esophagus?
