I have CuCl2 that is moderately contaminated with sodium salts.
Using ammonia to convert the copper chloride back to hydroxide results in any remaining salt impurities being held in solution, as the ammonia salt and sodium salts are highly soluble. The copper hydroxide is highly insoluble, so it falls out in a super fine powder.
If I add just enough ammonia that the filtrate takes on a bit of the dark blue indicating cuproammonium complexes, the remaining precipitate once settled and washed, should be highly pure copper hydroxide?
Should I use something other than water to wash the hydroxide?
