Spectrometer

Hello, I am trying to build an atomic emission spectrometre, I do not aspire to do something really complex, but I would like to obtain some nice results to show to my students.
I currently have a pair of prisms but I dont know if i completely messed up or something was wrong, but i achieved no decomposition of white light at all. ^^'
If anyone has done something similar or knows where can I get some info I would be very grateful.
