I originally posted this one /r/Soccer but thought you guys might be interested in reading it anyway:
The Chelsea-Vitesse link is a bit of a meme - where young Chelsea players' careers go to die. Having heard this so many times, I decided to go back through Chelsea's loan transfers and see where every single player that Chelsea shipped out to Vitesse ended up playing their football, and I'll put some thoughts on if they can be classed as a success or failure. We start on a high note, with Nemanja Matić
Surname | First name | Position | Vitesse seasons | Vitesse Apps(gls) | Current club | Total Chelsea apps | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Matić | Nemanja | DM | 2010-11 | 29(2) | Chelsea | 137(5) | Genuine success - as a Chelsea player he was won the Premier League, League Cup and FA Cup, as well as being in the PFA Team of the Year, Serbian Footballer of the Year, a mainstay in the national team. Rejoined Chelsea after 3 successful season at Benfica |
Rajković | Slobodan | CB | 2010-11 | 27(0) | Palermo | 0 | Moderate - Slobodan has yet to reach the highs that were presumably expected of him in the Chelsea Academy. He is a national team member, but he was banned from all football in 2008 for spitting at a referee. He's playing infrequently for a good team. |
Delač | Matej | GK | 2010-11 | No apps | Royal Excel Mouscron (loan from Chelsea) | 0 | Failure - At only 145 apps aged 24 (against, say, Courtois with 291), he's never really been much of a start at any time. It's pretty amazing he is still technically a Chelsea player. |
Kalas | Tomáš | CB | 2011-13 | 66(2) | Fulham (on loan from Chelsea) | 4(0) | Moderate - He's playing regularly for Fulham FC who are in the better half of the Championship. He's not a top-4 player, but he's forging a career for himself in the Championship. Another surprise to still be on the Chelsea books. |
Dávila | Ulises | AM | 2011-12 | 3(0) | Santos Laguna | 0 | Mostly a failure - Multiple loans to clubs of ever decreasing stature landed him a transfer to his homeland, though in 2015, some good performances for the Mexican U20's had the rumour mill talking again about a transfer to Europe. He hasn't played for the Mexican national team though, and is now 25. |
Aanholt | Patrick Van | LB | 2012-14 | 83(7) | Crystal Palace | 6(1) | Success - He's not a top four player, but he's a Premier League regular and recently transferred for a £14m fee. Has played in the Dutch national team. |
Kakuta | Gaël | AMR | 2012-14 | 34(2) | Deportivo (on loan from Hebei China Fortune) | 12(0) | Mostly a failure - For a time, a very controversial figure for Chelsea due to the transfer ban his transfer earned Chelsea. He wasn't worth the effort - since his Vitesse days, he's played one full season in Spain (Rayo) and one in China (Hebei, his parent club) but otherway only has had sporadic appearances. I suspect his wage in China is pretty good all things considered... |
Hutchinson | Sam | DRC | 2013-14 | 3(0) | Sheffield Wednesday | 6(0) | Moderate - Sam is now playing in the Championship for Sheff Weds where he is a regular in the team. He's not a top-4 player, but he's playing consistently. |
Piazon | Lucas | AM | 2013-14 | 29(11) | Fulham (on loan from Chelsea) | 3(0) | Slight failure - Like Kalas, he plays at Fulham and is playing regularly for the team, but his reputation and hype relegates him to failure (although not his fault, I suppose!). He was hyped as the next big thing, but has never truly delivered on his potential. Another name most are surprised to learn is still with Chelsea. Does play regularly in any team he's loaned to. |
Atsu | Christian | MR | 2013-14 | 28(5) | Newcastle (on loan from Chelsea) | 0 | Moderate failure - Has played irregularly for four clubs since Vitesse, including a stint at Bournemouth with no EPL apps. |
Oliveria | Wallace | DRL | 2014-15 | 22(1) | Grêmio (on loan from Chelsea) | 0 | Moderate failure - Has played irregularly for his two clubs since Vitesse, though at 22 could still reach his potential yet. |
Traore | Bertrand | AM | 2014-2015 | 48(17) | Alex (on loan from Chelsea) | 16(4) | Moderate success - He surprised Chelsea fans when in the awful 2015-16 he produced some good performances. The incoming Antonio Conte farmed him out to Ajax where he has a goal every 3rd game. Aged 21 with 35 caps for the national team, his future might not be at Chelsea but I suspect he will get good. |
McEachran | Josh | CM | 2014-15 | 19(0) | Brentford | 22(0) | Moderate - though Josh failed at Chelsea, despite much promise, he has found a home 4 miles west in neighbouring Brentford. |
Baker | Lewis | CM | 2015-present | 59(17) | Vitesse (on loan from Chelsea) | 1(0) | Moderate - I hesitated to call him a failure since he's only 21, but at 21 lots of other players were playing regularly in the EPL and he's not. That said, he does have a good record for Vitesse in apps and goals. I suspect he will end up in the Championship. Has been on the Chelsea books since 2005! UPDATE: Have been informed by Dutch fans that he is playing very well in Holland so have upgraded his status. |
Brown | Isaiah | FW | 2015-16 | 24(1) | Rotherham Utd (on loan from Chelsea) | 1(0) | Moderate/Too soon to say - Playing fairly regularly for Huddersfield, scoring irregularly but he's only 20. Probably too soon to say he's failed. Next season will be defining for him. |
Souza | Nathan Allan De | CM | 2015-present | 39(7) | Vitesse (on loan from Chelsea) | 0 | Too soon to say - as with Isaiah, next season will be the defining season for him. Like Isaiah he is only 20. |
Pantić | Danilo | CM | 2015-16 | 8(0) | Excelsior (on loan from Chelsea) | 0 | Moderate/TSTS - He's moved 'up' to being loan to Excelsior which bodes slightly well. He's again only 20 so who knows where he will go. |
Solanke | Dominic | FW | 2015-16 | 25(7) | Chelsea u23s | 1(0) | In limbo - Not being loaned out this season will have damaged his development, as he says wasting away in Chelsea's reserves despite some initial hype. Only 19 though, too soon to say. |
Miazga | Matthew | CB | 2016-present | 16(1) | Vitesse (on loan from Chelsea) | 2(0) | TSTS - His first season in Europe, but he has already been classed on /r/soccer as a future failure due to the Vitesse loan - remains to be seen. He's playing fairly regularly but suspect that he won't get any more USA caps to add to his existing 2 without game time at a more competitive league. Suspect he will be loaned to the championship next season. |
Ali | Mukhtar | DM | 2017-present | 0(0) | Vitesse (on loan from Chelsea) | 0 | Too soon to say - I didn't know this player existed |
Anyway, here's the count by my completely unscientific assessment:
1 x Genuine success
2 x Success
5 x Moderate
3 x Mostly a failure
1 x Failure
6 x Too Soon To Say (TSTS)
Hope that this was interesting to everyone! I enjoyed doing it.
Did I miss anyone? Let me know!
