Sore scrotum

I've just started some self imposed chastity, but I had to take the cage off after several hours because my scrotum skin hurt. It felt like it was stretched and burning. The only way to relieve the pain was to pull it further through the ring, but that would not last long. Is it possible I'm using too small/big of a ring?
