Specifically Smcd3gn2 , this is the one with the white band around the middle. This modem has been used for both business and residential customers.
The story:
I handle the networking/computers for the local community center and they called me up because the internet had gone down.
I get there to find that the modem was getting no power and had a large brown mark on the top of it. Obvious sign of overheating/scorching.
So today we contacted Charter to get a new modem, they came out and my g/f dealt with them (I couldn't be there).
They looked at the internals of the modem and she told me that the board was warped/partially melted.
She told me that the tech told her that he has seen that occur with several of these modems and that they have been known to catch fire.
So if you happen to have one of these modems I would recommend keeping an eye on it / keep it in view or contacting Charter and asking for a new one.
