I am of the opinion that all chemicals are just chemicals (because I'm a chemist) and it doesn't make sense to deem something as arbitrary as a particular chemical "illegal" and not capable of at least serving as a therapeutic when prepared in a controlled, regulated way. If a chemical is something that a person wants to put in their body and they are self-aware, able and of age they should be able to with minor restrictions to limit abuse. If these chemicals are used to harm others, such as poisons or explosives, those chemicals should be regulated as well. Cultural chemical awareness would go a lot further than making drugs illegal and people should be able to choose to consume what they want to as long as it doesn't harm other people. I have friends and family who've experienced death from drug abuse but that was still their choice to make, as they were offered help, and these support networks for abuse could be made much, much stronger if we weren't trying to use "drugs" as an excuse to incarcerate Americans and kill foreign nationals.
