I understand the reluctance to focus on the shooter because people "Don't want to glorify them and make them a celebrity". I think that sentiment is fine, but fairly naive. We know the name of every shooter in since the new cycle began, so I don't think there's any chance that we won't know it.
Given that complete anonymity is probably impossible without a change to police and reporting policy, doesn't it make more sense to look closely at the people who do shootings in order to look for warning signs that it might be happening? If these people are lashing out, or feel disenfranchised, or have genuine mental issues: wouldn't it be better to understand how to spot that and care for these people so they don't resort to violence?
Clearly people who are going to do mass shootings and then kill themselves aren't afraid of the repercussions. So punishment isn't a barrier to their actions. Perhaps compassion, then is a better alternative. Why wouldn't we reach out to people and say "Hey, if you ever get to this level of frustration, there's a place you can go to be taken care of where you don't have to be violent."?
This is a footnote from the CMV moderators. We'd like to remind you of a couple of things. Firstly, please read through our rules. If you see a comment that has broken one, it is more effective to report it than downvote it. Speaking of which, downvotes don't change views! Any questions or concerns? Feel free to message us. Happy CMVing!
