CMV: I believe that the US should no longer abide by Jus Solis citizenship doctrine, but rather stick to Jus Sanguinis.
Post Body

For those who aren't aware, Jus Solis refers to granting citizenship based on where you are born, Jus Sanguinis based on who your parents are.

Currently any person born in the US, be it to someone on vacation, a migrant worker, a foreign exchange student, etc. is granted US citizenship automatically. What's more, each US citizen can sponsor a non-citizen family member for residency.

I have friends who intentionally visit the US for birth for the sole purpose of granting their kids US citizenship, and to ensure that later in life they can move to the US, using their kids as sponsors.

I feel that this is essentially a 'cheat' and unfair, with significant potential harm to the US both in terms of the support that has to be given to people who move to the US late in life without ever having contributed. Also, this completely bypasses the usual immigration checks and processes allowing for any type of person to obtain residency through their children.

I don't think there needs to be any changes for Jus Sanguinis-any child of a US citizen should continue to receive US citzenship on birth, but I think that Jus Solis should only apply to persons with legal permanent resident status-not to those here illegally, or on short term visits.
