I believe that registered sex offenders are treated in a lenient manner, and that they should have a lot more restrictions to ensure they don't harm anyone in the future, especially in countries like mine, where sex offenders face little to no consequences. The reason I believe this restrictions are important, are to make sure that sex offenders can never harm anyone in the future, while protecting the most vulnerable people against sexual offenders. I believe the rules should be the ones states below.
1 - They should register with the authorities at least every month after their release from prison, especially when they change address. Both name, address, place of occupation, photo and convictions should be listed in a public online list.
2 - They shouldn't be able to live within 1000 meters of schools and places where children may congregate.
3 - They shouldn't be able to own electronic devices, photo or video material and shouldn't have access to the internet, unless allowed by the official authorities.
4 - They shouldn't be allowed to attend universities, have jobs with the government or jobs with minors or as healthcare professionals. They shouldn't also be entitled to any type of social benefits, except for retirement funds or disability.
5 - They shouldn't be allowed around minors, even with their own children. Fathers can't have access to their children, even with supervision, while mothers have to surrender their children to social services if they become pregnant.
6 - They shouldn't be allowed to own sexual products, like toys, lubricants, pornographic material and contraception methods. They shouldn't be allowed to marry (unless they were married before being convicted of a sexual offence) or have intimate relationships, while being banned from having any type of sexual contact with anyone, even if consensual.
I believe that any sex offender that violates this rules should be sent to prison, unless the violation was minor. In the end, I also believe they all sex offenders should be able to get themselves removed from the registry after a period between 10 and 20 years.
I am aware that my point of view can be considered draconian or even cruel, but I believe that everything is worth it to protect children. Change My View.
Edit: I should probably clarify this beforehand, but anyone below the age of 16 is not criminally liable in my country, therefore, they shouldn't be considered sex offenders even if they commit a sexual offence, since they can't be convicted in a criminal court. As a sidenote, peeing in public is not a crime, as long you don't do it in the open where you may be seen.
I used to work in a maximum security prison with an ICU as a nurse. One of the saddest fucking stories I ever saw was a 22 year old kid that was dying of stage 4 cancer (which is why he was in the ICU) that was imprisoned for being 19 and having sex with a 16 year old. Poor judgment, sure, but he would have been been in jail for a bunch more years and labeled as a sex offender for life, if it hadn't ended so early from cancer (side note they did let him out to go die at home, but it was so tragic)
Second worst story I personally dealt with the "victim" with - I was working at a girl's residential treatment facility, and a girl went AWOL when she was visiting her parents - they took her to a resort. It was the type of resort that had a bar in the lobby. The girl was only 14, but she truly could have passed for 21. I know that sounds hard to believe, but she had a fully matured body and had been through A LOT, which can just mature girls quickly. Anyhow the girl goes and hangs out in the bar before her parents realize she's gone (it's not the type of bar they ID) a guy who is 21, sees her, makes conversation, and scores! She agrees to go up to his room and has sex with him. Parents call 911 when she doesn't promptly return, bartender says that she went to the room with the guy who had been drinking with her, security goes to the room, finds them fucking, 911 arrives, and the poor dude is taken to jail, and from what I heard received a bad sentence. I know the account from the girl's side because she came back to the campus super remorseful and telling everyone it wasn't the guys fault she had lied about her age and being 21.
Before we take away anymore rights and add punishments, we need to better differentiate sex offenders.
